Kansas Bans Poor People From Spending Welfare On Cruise Ships

Kansas welfare recipients will be unable to get more than $25 per day in benefits under a new law sent this week to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback's desk by the state legislature.
The bill also prohibits welfare recipients from spending their benefits at certain types of businesses, including liquor stores, fortune tellers, swimming pools and cruise ships.

Well that is good for the economy; stopping people from spending. He needs to be voted out. From what I have read on this man, he seems crazy.

If people can't get their alcohol legally they'll get it otherwise, well-intentioned but dumb idea.

Good. Those people are hacks and scam artists and this is protecting those most likely to be vulnerable (i.e uneducated and poor) from falling victim too it.

Dumb and unfair idea, people shouldn't be deprived of simple Leisure and health activities just because they're poor. Especially if they have children.

Understandable, a lot of people are on welfare because they are lazy and dont try to get a job.

Since when do people on welfare have the time or money to go on cruises? My family is like upper-lower class and we can't afford vacations.

If they're on welfare they shouldn't be spending money on extravagances like cruises. I don't have a problem with this.

The only reason why I dont agree with this bill is because there shouldnt be a need for a bill for common sense.

The whole point of welfare is that you can't afford basic necessities, and the government has to suppply you with the funds in order to get them. If youre spending welfare money, which is money to feed your kids (the more kids you have is the more support you get) on weaves, liquor, and trips, that's plain ass irresponsible. Get a job.

A little ott: I don't get why people have such negative feelings and opinions towards people on welfare when they read a story about some abusing it. I don't know anyone on welfare that do these things. Then again I don't know many that are on welfare to begin with to say that most/all do and even if I did that would still be ignorant of me to say. Be mad at the individuals that abuse the system and crack down on that, not every damn body that's on it because theres people that actually need it.

Their priorities are all in the wrong places. Want a luxury cruise, get a job.

It's pretty simple logic the people abusing it are stealing from the people that actually need it and there will be a time, if this continues unchecked, cuts will have to be made. Who is going suffer? The truly needy are going to suffer.

Good, people on welfare should only be able to buy the essentials. We're trialling a basics card here atm, it works like a bank card but you can't use it to buy alcohol, cigarettes, to gamble, and you can't withdraw money from the account.

I kind of like this idea. If you can afford to take a cruise then you don't need to use welfare on a cruise ship.

This is ridiculous. Why spend time and effort on this that could be spent on bettering the education system?

No-one with adequate education who was on $9000 a year would spend what very little money they had on a cruise.
