There's also a large Muslim population in China, but their government is anti-religion and covers up statistics.

How is that a good thing? And the Chinese government isn't exactly pro-gay. It's just anti-religion.

I love China's government. Idc about their opinion about gay people. Being gay in China isn't that bad. China itself has a big gay history and they may open up their hearts for their gay children one day. And even if they don't, at least religion won't destroy their country like it does with ours. China doesn't give a single fck.

The Chinese government has been atheistic since the 1960's during Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution (the rise of communism in China) because state atheism is the official "religion" in communist states like in North Korea, Cuba and the former Soviet Union. Religion is a threat in communism but just like the former communist states, it's only a matter of time when communism completely falls in China and the people will get back to exercising their religious liberty again.

Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism were the ones that built the foundation of Chinese society and culture for centuries until it was destroyed in an instant during the Cultural Revolution. And the Chinese being tolerant of homosexuality has to do with their religions, because there's nothing in their religions that stigmatize homosexuality, and not because of their government.

I'm not surprised. Most muslims are very devout and usually religious famlies produce way more kids than those who aren't religious.

GURL, PLEASE. Most Vietnamese are atheists and we hate the Vietnamese government. Religion has nothing to do with the feeling of the ppl to the government. It's true that the governments used to see religions as a threat, but that's a stupid fear

And as far as I know, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism are still doing very well in China. The people don't necessary "follow" religion like Christians or Muslims follow rules and such, but they all have mutual respect for religions. You can go to a pagoda and pray without "follow" Buddism for example.

And believe it or not, one of the reasons why Chinese, as well as most Asians in general, are so smart is because us being atheists or agnostics. We live our lives based on science facts and morals, we don't need some books written thousands years ago to tell us how to live

Is this the reason why modern science flourished in Christian Europe and not in the pagan/atheistic world? Most scientists in history had no problem believing in the idea of God. Religion and science can go hand in hand when viewed properly. Even contemporary and academic scientists believe religion convey important truths. And most Asians are NOT atheists/agnostics, otherwise they would be the majority today. But atheists/agnostics only make up 16% of the world's population. Adherents of nontheistic eastern religions cannot be lumped in with the atheists/agnostics. They are their own categories. Hindus and Buddhists (the largest religious groups in South and East Asia) are more of pantheists/monists/deists, not atheists/agnostics. Atheism is not only a disbelief in a diety but a rejection of supernatural beliefs altogether. It is associated with a materialistic doctrine that knows nothing higher than this world. Hindus, Buddhists and many followers of Asian folk religions believe in a different idea of god and the supernatural from the Abrahamic religions. They do not merit the same materialistic mindset of what would be considered atheists.
