That's true, but it's just that a lot of the trends Rihanna sports (visually) are things that the cool kids on tumblr or in the streets are wearing years prior. She may be in control and just bored (I would be too if I had enough money to transform myself ever 4 months too) but I'm just saying that her changes are reflective of what is trending, and not the other way around. I guess it's how you perceive trends. Are they trends before they reach mainstream or is it a trend once you gain that critical mass?
To me if there is a subculture doing it, it's a trend. Generally these subcultures are really into what's new and fresh, and so move away from things once too many people are on it, just like how people said Sea Punk died the day she performed on SNL with that Sea Punk style.
The reason I see it as marketing is because Rihanna is known as the coolest pop star (at least in my books). She always looks great, is on trend, etc. She's fashion personified. But even though fashion sets trends, it also takes trends and puts them on the runway. Moschino's logo stuff was not something that started there, it was something gaining popularity that they offered back for money.
