Belgian recording artist, singer and songwriter Stromae continues to promote his acclaimed second studio album “√” (Racine Carrée), which has sold over 2.2 million copies worldwide, and was released on digital retailers on August 16, 2013 via Mosaert Records. The album includes mostly European hits as "Papaoutai" (241M views), "Formidable" (109M views), "ta fete"(16M views) and "Tous Les Memes"(74M views).
With Stromae's first real push into the American market — including a hugely buzz-generating set at the NPR Music SXSW showcase last month, and a feature on "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" — "Carmen" is the sixth single from the album. It premiered this week and has already garnered more than 5 million views. It's well on its way to being another monster video hit for Stromae.
He's planning to release “√” (Racine Carrée) in the States this year - including some remixes, new English versions of the songs, new videos and some collaborations. His short North American tour begins April 5 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and ends April 9 in Oakland, Calif. During his spring tour Stromae will also perform in Seattle and Portland, Oregon. In the fall of 2015 he will perform in New York City on Oct. 1 at Madison Square Garden.
The song was produced by the "Alors on Danse"-singer Stromae himself with the collaboration of Aurélien”Orelsan” Cotentin, and it was inspired by French composer George Bizet and his opera “Carmen“, premiered in 1875.
The cartoon music video directed by the acclaimed French filmmaker Sylvain Chomet was exclusively premiered on BuzzFeed Music.
Can you spot Barack Obama, The Queen, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Kimye?
A sixth single from Racine Carrée though? That album is kind of old, but I guess Stromae wants his Teenage Dream sized era. Truly one of the pop masterpieces of this decade
The video is amazing I love it! Giving me Triplets of Belleville teas! The song could've remained an album track though it's good but doesn't scream single material. 5 million views already though
