I wouldn't say it's disrespectful. By me living on my own, my parents offer me money all the time and most times I let them know I'm good and I don't need it and they're perfectly fine with it. Not sure why he'd be offended.

I had roommates all through college and after a while, you start to want your own space. It's not as bad as you might think.
