Whitney Houston's "Exhale (Shoop Shop)" spent the first eleven weeks at number two weeks behind "One Sweet Day." Houston was bulleted most of the time, as she had debuted at #1 the week prior to "One Sweet Day's" debut at #1 (three #1s in a row debuted there, as "Fantasy" preceded Exhale). Then " Missing" by Everything But The Girl moved into #2, but I can't remember for how many weeks. Since OSD dropped all the way to #5 after its 16th week on top, the songs below it were really closing in at the end.

Had Mariah Carey and Boys To Men not sung OSD at the Grammy's/AMA's (I can't remember which one) just prior to when Billboard cutoff to start collecting for what would turn out to be the song's 16th week at #1, the song would have stopped at 14 or 15 weeks (the awards effects in 1996 were as usual split up over two weeks.)

Thanks. I'm surprised it didn't do better though. I was thinking around 150,000, given that Adele's "Skyfall" sold nearly 100,000. Then again, Skyfall has had longer staying power too, since it still pops up on the Physical Singles Sales Chart from time to time. I was way off then.

Do we know what songs were on top of Hot Singles Sales the most number of weeks back when HDS wasn't incorporated in Hot 100?

One post on Pulse says One Sweet Day was an 11-week sales #1, and I Will Always Love You was a 14-week sales #1. I dunno if any others are at their level are not from that post tho.

For 2000-early 2005:
Uh Huh 10 wks topping Hot Singles Sales [Hot 100 #37]
Die Another Day 11 wks [#8]
Picture 11 wks [#4]

I know 2012 started with On-Demand Audio Streaming, then 2013 with "Harlem Shake" began to count Overall Streaming (YouTube included)

And before it was Sales (Digital/Physical) + Airplay + Streaming (a little from AOL/Yahoo, iirc) + Ringtones (not so sure)

I'm quite certain YouTube streaming was already included long before Harlem Shake, it just wasn't as big of a component. Wasn't that why TiK ToK blocked Bad Romance that one week?

"One Sweet Day" got a boost that kept it strong from performing at the Grammy's in early 1996 the week before its 16th week at Number One. Otherwise OSD would have fallen out after 15 weeks. The boost is evidenced by the song's fairly large drop the following next week of 1 to 5. The only song with a 12+week stay at #1 and a bigger drop is Eminem's "Lose Yourself," which plummeted from 1 to 9 (see full chart run below). The song spent 12 weeks at #1, but only 13 weeks in the Top 3, only 16 weeks in the Top 10, only 21 weeks in the Top 40, and only 23 weeks on the Hot 100. Yes, OSD only spent 11 other weeks on the Hot 100 apart from its 16 weeks at #1 too, but that song debuted at #1, and had an 11 week fall from #1. LY dropped off from #1with only six descending weeks. The short time on the chart seems strange considering what a huge digital monster LY has become, especially since it was released prior to the I-Tunes launch.
