I have never had problems with the particles you mentioned or ö etc., but then again, I'm Czech so I heard German quite a lot around me when I was growing up.
My biggest problems were the grammatical genders (mostly because they're different than in my language so it was hard to remember sometimes - e.g. house is a masculine in Czech, while it's a neuter in German etc.), word order and basically everything grammar related sometimes.
