Yep pretty impressive
Especially when it's not doing so well with critics.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 was critically acclaimed and did way less
And it's a sequel

That’s more like it, Mr. Katzenberg…
I was pretty grim about the box office prospects for DreamWorks Animation’s Home in my “box office” portion of my mixed-positive review. I promised a Mea Culpa if the film ended up being a big hit, but frankly I didn’t think I’d have to offer one this soon. I was super optimistic about How to Train Your Dragon 2, and I’m generally optimistic about DreamWorks animated features, both in terms of artistic potential and box office returns. But they’ve been in a bad place the last few years, with middling returns for the likes of Turbo, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Rise of the Guardians, and The Penguins of Madagascar. Even I had given up hope, feeling a bit like Charlie Brown after being promised by Lucy that this time she’d totally let him kick that football. But Home is indeed looking like the smash hit, the smash non-sequel hit no-less, that DreamWorks desperately needed. I am very happy to have been wrong this week. Because Home, starring Rihanna, Jim Parsons, and Jennifer Lopez, made $15.6 million yesterday.

The $132 million production, distributed by 20th Century Fox and based on Adam Rex’s The True Meaning of Smekday, scored one of the biggest opening days for a DWA non-sequel ever, behind Kung Fu Panda ($20m in 2008) and Monsters Vs. Aliens ($16.75m on this very day in 2009). If we’re using the weekend multipliers for other recent mid-to-late March DWA openers (Monsters Vs Aliens, The Croods, How to Train Your Dragon), and I think we should, then Home should end up with around $54m-$58m for the weekend again the biggest non-sequel debut behind Kung Fu Panda ($60m) and Monsters Vs. Aliens ($59m). Of note, last year’s March release, Mr. Peabody and Sherman pulled a 4x weekend multiplier off a $8m Friday, so a similar result would give Home a $62m debut, but we’ll cross that bridge if that happens.
Either way, assuming the film isn’t inexplicably front-loaded this weekend, this is a great result for a studio that really needed a flashy win. Chalk the success up to the star power of Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, and (to a lesser extent) Jim Parsons. And yes, unknown demographics notwithstanding, I think we can partially chalk this one up to the somewhat unconventional notion of having a major animated feature starring a young black female as opposed to the standard young white male hero template. As I discussed back when Sony’s Annie came out,, most of the mainstream black-centric multiplex releases that we’ve been seeing over the last few years have been strictly-for-adults fare, so the fact that this was a kid-friendly animated feature centered around a black female lead should not be discounted. And it will be interesting to see if that effects the film’s legs, although DWA animated features, especially the March ones, are usually pretty leggy.
Beyond that, there is the matter of Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez’s relative star power. Obviously they are (these days) more known for their musical careers than their acting careers, but they are media-friendly celebrities and their new singles released for the film garnered copious free publicity along with the other various events that promoted the film beyond trailers, billboards, and bus station posters. What frankly makes this more impressive is that we haven’t exactly been starved for kiddie fare of late. Home flourished despite the consistent presence of the likes of Paddington, The SpongeBob Movie, and Cinderella. We’ll talk more about this tomorrow, when I hope the news is at least as good as it seems today. I wish the movie were a little better, ironically because I was worried for the film’s box office prospects. But I needn’t have worried. With the caveat that a single big hit won’t singlehandedly reverse long-term issues, DreamWorks is presumably partying like it’s 2009.
The rest of the Friday box office news will be along shortly.

It seems like everyone is stunned at how well this is doing and its weird because I had no idea Dreamworks was even in a decline lately. They better be glad they casted Rihanna in this, idk about her voice acting skills but her name has honestly given this a lot of press.
And I think it's ESPECIALLY encouraging that the lead is a young black girl. Like thats really uncommon and should be seen as a victory across the board.
Stan bias aside.
