It all depends on how much of a lead Uptown Funk had going into yesterday, and what its numbers were yesterday at the time BBHMM. 250K may be overdoing the total, perhaps 150K is more likely, with Uptown Funk's infamous weekend effect allowing the song to hang onto HDS too. With 150 K, I think Rihanna would debut around #15.

Maybe they've been holding onto the remix and getting ready for a discount to defend against challengers. As I said, these tools were used to lengthen The Boy Is Mine and Independent Women Part I stays at Number One when the competition started closing in. So this wouldn't be the first time a label used tricks up its sleeve to keep their song at #1.

Airplay didn't matter much back then. Songs like Honey, My All, Heartbreaker, Thank God I found You, LoverBoy etc did not do well at all on pop radio. Most of them flopped.

Especially before 1998, airplay counted very little. Billboard increased its weight at the end of 1998 but it was sill all about sales.

As for Shania Twain, I don't think she discounted her single from the very first week like Mariah used to do.

I remember how they deeply discounted Loverboy but Tommy mottolla and company rush released Bootylicious 2 weeks early to block mariah from jumping from 55 to 1. Booty licious hit #1 for 2 weeks and Loverboy had to settle for #2.

Mariah's main tactic back in the day was waiting for her songs to hit top 15 on airplay before releasing a single.

In any event, she wasn't the only one to do it and if I don't like a song I'm not going to spend 1.99, .99 or .49c on it.
