Her husband, head of Columbia, cheated anyway back in 1995 like they did with many of her singles. They were selling the physical single for like 69 cents while the average price of physical singles was like $3. And with 1 you'd get 2-3 for free for a while. I remember my aunt bought it and my cousins and I were making fun of the ridiculous price.
Uptown Funk is a legit no1 that never cheated in any way.
Can you imagine if there was ATRL back then? The draaaaaging!

Was "One Sweet Day" discounted, though? I don't remember OSD being one of Mariah's massively discounted singles.

Literally every Mariah #1 was massively discounted. I love how no one likes to talk about that though.

The internet during the 90s isn't like it is today. There isnt as much documentation of artist tactics, and it wasnt nearly as obvious. I guess there just isnt the evidence and everybody forgets.

I was 21 at the time, so I am old enough to remember the situation. Yes, Mariah Carey's label discounted many of her singles, some deeply and as low as 49 cents, to boost her sales. This was true to an extent for "Fantasy" (down to like $1.99) the single released just before "One Sweet Day," and for "Always Be My Baby" the song following "One Sweet Day."
However, "One Sweet Day" was such an incredible hit in and of itself there was no need to discount the song to keep it on top for 16 weeks. Had the label discounted the song after it started falling, "One Sweet Day's" rather rapid descent may have been slowed, the song may have sold more copies, and it could have wound up as the #1 song of 1996. "One Sweet Day sold a little over 2.3 million physical singles. I know that does not sound like a lot compared to the download totals hits have today, but any time a physical single reached multi-platinum, or sales of two million plus. Back between 1989 and 1999, this was considered a huge accomplishment.
Nevertheless, I doubt either Mariah Carey, Boys To Men, or their respective labels saw "Macarena," which sold between 3.5 and 3.8 million physical singles, in addition to the 500,000 from the Summer of 1995. blowing up in the Summer of 1996, and blocking their "One Sweet Day" from claiming Billboard's 1996 Song of the Year.

True, and song of the decade sounds better than song of 1996 anyway.

Loverboy, Thank God I Found You, My All, Honey; pretty much any of her Number Ones between 1997 and 2000 (and a #2 in 2001 blocked by Destiny Child's Bootylicious, also discounted to 49 cents by her ex-husbands label), and they were marked down to 49 cents.

eh 3 or 4 out of 18 I wouldn't consider "many". more like a handful. One thing I would argue is that almost all artists discounted their songs prices after a while back then. It wasn't like it was soley a Mariah Carey thing. That's just how it was done back then to boost sales. At the time let's remember that we couldn't just go online and download or rip a song for free.

Not true at all. Mariah did it blatantly from the first week. 49 or 69 cents while all other new singles were sold for like $3. She was a pioneer. No label would let their artists discount their singles so much because it would generate zero profit. Mariah had her husband so they could get away with it and were willing to sacrifice any profits from singles in order to snatch more no1s.
And apart from the discounts, they used other shady tactics too. Like buy 1 and get 2 more for free etc..
Listen to us who are older and remember.

She was not the only artist discounting her singles, and not every single she discounted went down to 49 cents. Some were discounted to around $1.99. I will rephrase my wording and say many of her songs were discounted, some deeply, especially towards the end of the 1990's.

Shania Twain's "You're Still The One" was discounted to 99 cents. I'll add to this post as I think of others. Faith Hill's "Breathe" was discounted, though I don't remember the exact price. Toni Braxton's "He Wasn't Man Enough For Me" was $0.99 to $1.49, I think The Spice Girls "Wannabe" was discounted, but I don't know to what price.
After Billboard added in airplay only titles at the beginning of the 1999 Chart Year, several singles through much of 2001 were issued right as airplay was about to peak, at a deeply discounted price, with around 550,000 copies, or just enough to ensure the song could go gold and hit #1.

One good thing about Style not totally smashing is that it hasn't had the opportunity to be blocked by UF. It would be awful if that happened.

I'm saying between #7 & #12. I'm basing this on download totals of 250k. These sales numbers may be too high, but I can't see them being too low.
