DnD, "Elfen Lied" is kind of overrated, too. It was not for me. For something so graphic, it was oddly boring. The intro scene was kind of EPIC, though, so my mind was expecting to be BLOWN, but it pretty much fizzled from there, for me. People swear by it, though.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is fantastic too. If something aired on Adult Swim, there is a good chance that it is very high quality and worth watching. Aside from Inuyasha and it repeating the same storyline three times.
I actually really enjoyed a lot of those foreign animated films like Nausicaa and Howl's Moving Castle
I didn't like "Akira" either. I felt it was just being gratuitously violent and ridiculous for the sake of it. Kinda like how madonna's music is gratuitously over-sexualized and overly anti-Catholic just for the sake of it.

the intro is indeed epic. the reason i have any interest tbh. hmmmm that disappointing, the show i posted above has the same premise (a person who can kill at will) but the plot is thick and well thought out. i'd imagine it has better character development and script as well.
Awe. The Way He Looks is on Netflix now. It's so sweet and charming - nothing too special but is pretty decent. There are so few good gay movies on Netflix lol.
I liked Spirited Away but people who say they love that movie are the type of people who do it to prove they know "good movies!" so i didn't wanna say it.

The whole cast is so good. Shinji is kinda so annoying but I find him relatable in a lot of ways, lol, and he's a pretty good character. Asuka, Rei, Misato, Kaworu too.

He can be an annoying little ****er, but I really love the characterization and the social / psychological aspect of the show. Loved the first two movies of the reboot and can't wait to watch the third and fourth.
