IDK, because alot of the oldschool singers were heavy smokers but remained in good voice till old age. I think it's drugs. But decades of cigarette smoking definitely make one's speaking voice hoarse so I can only imagine what it does to one's singing voice. Didn't alot of Aretha Franklin's vocal decline also come because of smoking? I read somewhere once she quit in the 90s is when she gained all of that weight.
