Selena wasnt born in Mexico either anywho I dont consider Yuri the mexican Madonna more like the mexican Cindy Luper or however you spell her name.

Girl Selena Quintanilla could barely even speak spanish. She wasn't Mexican, she was an American raised by Mexican parents. A "chicana". Her image was not that provocative aside from what she wore, she made no statements, and her music couldn't be farther away to what Madonna is.

Don't get me wrong, she's an icon and will always be remembered, but she is not the mexican Madonna.

You literally know nothing about her career if you seriously think she is being provocative all of a sudden, and the Queen of Reinvention has been anything but bland, it's clear you have a bias but see beyond your hater glasses and educate yourself a bit

I remember last year on La Voz when she said that she's been copying Madonna since forever. Then she randomly mentioned Gaga too in the same interview. She looks great btw

She's the Mexican-American MJ IMO. She never lipped her performances, designed her own clothes and had her own boutiques with her fragrances (before ANY pop girl or boy), did her own choreography, co-wrote her music, etc . We need to make an appreciation thread for her since the anniversary is coming up .


And holy ****!! I have a new found respect for the member Swag . clock all those ignorants on Yuri's career! She was on soap operas too (Volver A Empezar). Most of y'all didn't even get to see Paulina or Gloria Trevi start their careers. Yet you care to try and state facts on Yuri when she started before them?! and don't get me wrong, I like me some Pau and Gloria but they all came after Yuri. And she is still killing it.

This is who I came in expecting to see tbh.

Both Selena's parents were born and raised in America, I believe they were both fluent in Spanish. Selena (and most likely her siblings as well.) did eventually become fluent by her late teens. I think she was considered the Mexican Madonna because of her popularity and I guess because she was naturally sexy.

First of all, before her passing, Selena was not popular in all regions of Mexico nor in all social classes. It was only after she passed away that the shocking news of the murder became tabloid fodder and front page news everywhere and then a huge marketing machine initiated by her dad started selling mottos like 'the Mexican Madonna'. There were many people in Mexico that hadn't even heard of her before she died. And Selena didn't even sing pop or mainstream music, but regional music (Cumbia and Tex-Mex) so the comparison is no even logical. Again it was only after she passed away that her record company released a couple of unfinished mainstream songs she had recorded which were promoted with the movie, mainly 'I could fall in Love', 'Dreaming of You'.

And they are all great performers/singers except Thalia and Pau, but none of them can fill up as many Auditorio Nacionales as Yuri can. So in Mexico, Yuri has more public. She just performed for 20,000 people this weekend (two auditorios). And in the last 5 years she has done around 10.

Thalia can barely fill one or two, Paulina can't fill one at all, Alejandra one or two and with plenty of other guests/singers. After Yuri I think only Gloria can fill a couple of them by her own.
