It's fun to imagine what the good old VMAs of yore would have nominated in these tragic recent years. Like, "Call Your Girlfriend" clearly should have won in 2011, and it has just the right cool factor that it might have had it been released in 1991 instead. And to think they picked "Hollaback Girl" over "What You Waiting For?" and "Cool."

Although I do think the 2011 race is the best stack of nominees MTV has produced in about a decade, I would have not minded it being spread to six to include Call Your Girlfriend.

Still cannot believe 212, Video Games/Born to Die and VOTY NOMINEE (!!!) Bad Girls were snubbed in 2012,

I mean, imagine a Countdown/212/Bad Girls/Born to Die/We Found Love. Five actually quite good, if not great videos nominated. Push Starships and LYLAS to Pop Video, and forget the other one existed. Dammit MTV. It should not have to be this hard!

That 2012 lineup sounds divine! The Azealia/Lana/M.I.A.-type nominations are exactly the cool factor that the VMAs have lost. When did MTV stop trying to be a trendsetter?

Like last year. How are four of the VOTY nominees female, and yet only 1.5 are in Female Video? How does that make SENSE?

Surely a Partition/Wrecking Ball/Chandelier/Fancy/Royals lineup would have been better?

All of this would've slayed and is exactly how MTV should handle these twos categories

Leave the actually great female videos for the Best Female category. They don't have to go super indie with it, but the least they can do is nominate the relevant female artists with quality videos that have sparked some buzz. Then they can leave Best Pop Video for the mainstream pop hits with cute videos. This way, the VMAs can restore some credibility by actually rewarding deserving female videos while still honoring the big pop hits of the year
