OSX never used to be free. And when it wasn't, it was cheap.
Microsoft make the Surface, and already get the initial cut from the OS shipped with PC's. They do not need to charge as much as they do, for a simple OS upgrade. Especially with Windows 10, which is basically an apology in form of an OS.
EDIT: And Windows 7 still reigns supreme. My housemate just bought a Windows PC with 8.1 and tried playing Hearthstone and the game lagged and had major stuttering issues.Same with a few other games. She also would suffer occasional freezes that would last 10 - 20 seconds if she had a few Windows open.
She handed it to me and was like, "I can't use this, put Windows 7 on it" and now Hearthstone runs perfectly fine, and her PC hasn't frozen since.
