I've actually heard a few years back that radio directors decide what sounds they want on the air and which artists they're going to support off the bat that year before the year is even in full swing. If they feel your music isn't going to fit that trend then, you won't get supported as fast or even at all. I can totally see that being the case, look at 45S, LA Love and Gwen's singles.

In Meghan's case, she got an On the Verge deal. Her music video was barely having steam on youtube prior her song stalling in the Top 40 on pop radio then suddenly flying top 10 with unrealistic updates for a new artist. Radio deals run the industry now but I'm glad Meghan runs her own ship with Epic. LA has been known to force a change on to his artists.
