Brandon Heyman used his birthday money to save 17-year-old horse Karazan from being slaughtered
Nine-year-old Brandon Heyman and his horse Karazan joke around at Heymans home on McConnell Road in South Frontenac, Ont. on Friday March 13, 2015. "It's my very first horse," exclaimed Brandon. "I clean her, wash her, groom her, but my sister feeds her; I don't know the proper feed mix."
MJ (she prefers that to Mary Jane) found Karazan through Need You Now Equine (NYNE), an Ottawa-based non-profit organization that finds homes for horses and donkeys earmarked, in this case, for someone's dinner plate.
"I was looking at the NYNE website one night and Brandon asked about this one cute red horse on the screen," the mother recalled. "I told him the horse didn't have any place to go and what will probably happen to it."
Junior's jaw dropped. He stared incredulously at the image on the screen, stunned to hear of the homeless horse's impending fate.
