ALPINE, Calif. — One of two horses standing on a rural road was killed after a driver of a rental car hit it overnight.
Paramedics took the driver of the mangled rental car to a hospital. He appeared to have an injury to his head.
The horse died at the crash site.
A second car collided with the other horse about a mile from the original crash on Willows Road, San Diego County Department of Animal Services Deputy Director Dan DeSousa said.
“The horses did not let themselves out into the freeway,” said Carey Cooper, owner of the second horse that was struck.
Her horse was taken to the Bonita Shelter with serious cuts to the rear leg.
“It hit the hood and hit the windshield of the truck,” DeSousa said.
He said the agency is looking into whether the horses were let out.
“The horse owner that came here told us her horse is normally in a corral with the gate shut, so we don’t know if someone just forgot,” DeSousa said.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating. According to CHP, emergency dispatchers began getting calls at about 1:15 a.m. about several horses running along Interstate 8 near Willows Road.
“We have reason to think that there’s some sort of foul play,” Cooper said.
For that reason, she is asking for a thorough investigation.
