Explaining never works. If someone was rude / bitchy enough to call you out, they won't change their minds no matter how much sense you make when you explain yourself to them. If you feel really bad about it (which you shouldn't), you can send them a short message with no bitterness or overzealous apologies to just set the record straight, but don't do it in person.
