Yes, it is. It happens to all legends, you can't expect someone who has 34 years of career and 13 studio albums to sell like a pop girl with 3 albums and 6 years of career. You can choose to ignore these facts if it helps you sleep better at night.

But the point is that Madonna fans didn't use the "she's been in the industry for x years" until after the predictions came in and were poor. Prior to that, it was all about how she's going to slay.

Cher was in her fifties and had been in the industry longer than Madonna has been now when she released 'Believe'. It doesn't matter how old she is (no matter how much Madonna tries to say otherwise), if you put out a good song that is catchy, people will like it and buy it and its album. That's just not happening this time around because Madonna hasn't done enough apparently.

You can choose to ignore these facts if it helps you sleep better at night.

Your point is flawed.. Cher was in her 50s in the late 90s whereas albums sales were much better. Whats really funny to me is that you take the time to try and discredit a living legend. Cher's album (FROM 1998!) didn't leak either so.. I don't really know what you're trying to correlate besides age

We're not using "sales were bigger back then" as an excuse surely. If people want it, they buy it. Ask taylor Swift.

You wanna compare Taylor (who is the height of her career) with women in her 50s and in her 4th/5th decade. Sweet logic

That was my point in an earlier post. Cher's "Believe" had sales radio could not ignore. Believe as an album did not come close to debuting at #1. It peaked at #4, several weeks after it debuted, but went on to sell five million copies, the biggest selling album ever for Cher. "Music" had sales radio could not ignore. "Hung Up" and "Four Minutes" also sold well enough to catch radio's attention.

I'm making points as an objective bystander. I'm not a Madonna fan trying to make excuses for her. But, I know she was hurt badly by the leak, and I know with the right song she would get the single and album sales radio couldn't ignore. I never heard "Living For Love," so I can't judge whether the song should have succeeded or not.

There may be a follow up single from Rebel Heart that Americans fall in love with, and RH rebounds. Madonna has had hits far into her albums before. However, for one or more reasons, Americans rejected LFL like no other prior lead off single from Madonna, and it's impacting RH's sales.

Babs album was a duet album with very in demand artists.. Also did it leak?

Believe by Cher was released BEFORE the massive consolidation of the US radio industry so do not use that as an argument. Radio was not that ageist before 2000.

US congress dramatically reduced regulations in the late 90s in the radio industry and companies started merging or buying each other. A few giants started controlling everything. Then in 2000 Cheal Channel, the no2 broadcaster, bought AMFM, the no1 broadcaster and became one giant company. That changed the radio industry forever.
