Both are at fault, along with mismanagement. No singular reason for the atrocious roll out

I am sure the label and Mariah were contractually bound about what get to be released as singles and other things. They just can’t stop her, unless it violates the terms that they agreed upon. And when the artist doesn’t let you listen to the music until the very last minute, there is nothing much you can do to promote it.
She must have had her reasons for doing those things and I am fine with it, but I don’t think it’s fair to put the blame entirely on Def Jam like some of the earlier posts. I do agree that this messy release is likely to be a result of a lot miscommunication from both sides tho. But I reckon if Mariah were on another label at that time, the roll out’d still have been a mess.
