They're not even a copy of each other. I can hear Robin sampling the beat at the beginning but that's it.

Don't artists sample all the time. wtf. Even Mariah's Fantasy copied the exact same beat as another song.

But Mariah and her producer Jermaine Dupri asked permission to use that beat. And the owners get paid royalty fees. Otherwise Mariah and JD would've been sued.

The music industry has bee re-hashing the same s**t for decades. This will force music producers to be more creative and do different sounds unless they pay for the rights, which is a good thing. We need more sophisticated and experimental sounds.

yeah, if the song was a major flop, they wouldn't even have thought of going to court.
Beside that. what even is original these days, if you search hard enough there is a song that sounds alike for every released song.

Yeah, it happens all the time. But usually whoever they sample gets credited and paid as they go along. In this case that didn't happen, so they're having to go back and pay all the money which he missed out on.

Pharrell won't care, he's had like 50 hits in his career. Robin has only really had 2 big hits (maybe 3 if you count Give It 2 U as a big hit), but I think he'll still be rich after this.

This decision by no means is a critique on artists sampling others work. If that were the case, Jeremih would be losing LOTS of money right now.

This really just comes down to respecting the people you take from. If you're going to do what Robin Thicke did and blatantly rip off a Marvin Gaye song, then you better at least give him some recognition. Plagiarism has never been allowed in this country. Why does this settlement seem to be rubbing so many people the wrong way?

What's the protocol when sampling lyrics? Rappers referencing/reciting other rapper's lyrics is common, but I can't think of any high profile law suits. Is that because they're aren't many, or is it somehow more egregious when it's a beat or an instrumental that's ripped off? Jeremih only seems to "sample" the hook of "Rhythm is a Dancer." Other than that, there don't seem to be any similarities between the two songs.
