I'm not Japanese, and I'm saying what she did is not offensive. If a Japanese person walks in this thread and states that Nicki's use of Japanese Harajuku culture is indeed offensive, I, a non-Japanese person, have no right to contradict him/her. I would not know what I was talking about.
gwen was called out for appropriating japanese/asian culture way back in like 2004 though
Gwen was called out, but if she were to have her 'Harajuku Girls' nowadays she'd face worse backlash than Iggy
OT: the only prominent racism people seem to care about in the US is that against blacks
Racism against Muslims, Asians, Latins etc still seems to be accepted
Not every single instance of one taking part in another culture is 'appropriation'.
I wouldn't call it appropriative. She wasn't perpetuating any hurtful stereotypes of Japanese or Asians + I remember seeing a video of her speaking about Harajuku culture in Japan. She actually knows something about it and was never exploiting it for her own personal monetary gain; she actually has a love for the culture.
Iggy and Miley asses are different stories.
You are Black. Be down with your own struggle. Don't be like those idiots who think fighting racism and bigotry isn't important. Again, you are Black. Support and defend the integrity of your heritage. This is not whining. This is real.
A Kimono is a special clothing peace for the Japanese though, worn on specific occasions only and originated out of tradition, and she sexualised it.
But you're right, a Japanese persons' opinion would matter most.
This whole cultural appropriation thing has been beat to death so much people will now define any and everything as cultural appropriation. It's boring. The real cause is lost and people will pick and choose what they WANT to be offended about by how much the like said offended.
Quote:
Cultural appropriation is the adoption of elements of one culture by members of a different cultural group who may eventually become the new face of said cultural practices, passing the illusion that certain cultural practices are authentic to them.

It's only racist when white girls do this. No one complains about black girls doing pop (according to Azealia, a "white genre") but if a white artist does rap, it's cultural appropriation
what's more offensive is ppl lumping asian as one. Japanese and Chinese is not the same! Japanese and Indians are not the same!! we all have different cultures and heritages and it's incredibly offensive to be lumped as one!!!
