Awareness is the best thing one person can do. It's not like Patricia [or any of us] really has any power to make huge changes, but we have a voice that allows us to bring an issue and facts to people's minds. I guarantee you that most of the people that heard her speak didn't even think of the issue before.
P.S. Your stance reminds me of this interview I saw with a Bollywood actress and a reporter [both straight] about gay rights. The actress insisted that it's the government's responsibility to protect their rights and it doesn't matter what the mentality of the public is. The reporter agreed, but he said that the government just making laws won't change much except legal status. He said there needs to be public represention, education and awareness about homosexuality to bring real change. I think that is the same issue we're discussing. Changing the law doesn't bring people equality.
