It was a great run Hollywood, you should be proud of that. But that run of originality is over. Inspired by this Reddit thread — a discussion of how Christopher Nolan’s film “Interstellar” was the only original film to crack the worldwide box office top 10 in 2014 — we got to thinking. Are there other years like this? When did Hollywood become so well-known for producing franchises, reboots and sequels, as opposed to films designed and created specifically for the silver screen? So we went all the way back to 1975, cross-checked United States box office records on Box Office Mojo, and made a chart that would help us see things more clearly.
On the right, you’ll see the number of truly original films released every year between 1975 and 2014 that achieved a spot in the top 10 domestic yearly gross until 1988, and worldwide gross after 1989. And on the left, you’ll note familiar faces – a bubble for each sequel, reboot or member of a franchise released in that decade which cracked the top 10 yearly gross.
Now that this year’s controversial Oscars are over, we hope this chart gives you something to think about. And hey, we’re all for rebooting the Spider-Man franchises over and over to infinity and beyond, but one request: next time, find an actual teenager to portray teenage Peter Parker. Otherwise, it’s just going to get weird.
