I used to be a huge fan. Loved Breakaway and My December. The music used to be pop-rock but thoughtful and refreshing, with a hint of #southerngothic. Loved her.
But after My December I stopped relating to her sound. It became formulaic and she started pandering to radio. Resorting to recreating some of her older hits or just following trends.
I still like Kelly 'cause obviously she has so much talent, but I can't help but notice the decrease in "quality". It kinda pisses me off. Maybe it's her label?
I wonder how her fans feel. Of course it's okay to disagree, but don't think i'm trying to "drag' her or anything, it's just my opinion, so let's be cool.
Thoughts?
Someone said it's just not her but also her label doing it with other artists. I think at this point, Kelly is just fed up and can't wait to go somewhere else.
But yeah her music has gone downhills slightly. I never had a problem with Mr. Know It All and Stronger, but I wished she released Let It Down and Alone because they were the more rock-sounding songs.
I wouldn't say that she devolved muscially but she definitely changed paths & went for a full-on pop sound. She still cranks out some nice album tracks & Stronger is one of my favorite albums from her. Her singles have become more radio catered but if you look past those, she still puts out some strong albums.
If anything declined, It's her music videos. I'm sure even Kelly's biggest stans can agree with this.
I can understand what you mean. But if she did another pop/rock album, people would claim she is doing the same damn thing over and over again. Now she releases a poppy record and people miss her pop/rock music. As a stan, I'm happy she's doing something different. Not here for SUBG 5.0. I think it also has to do with her label. Pretty sure they have the final say on what goes on the albums. This is the last album on her contract, I believe she's going to sign on to another label with more freedom to write and record whatever she wants. If you've listened to some of her demos, Kelly is capable of making amazing music from country to R&B but I think RCA has restricted her to just releasing cute pop music. I think she will shock people after her days with RCA.
Naw. ATRL seems to expect her to try to replicate Breakaway but pop/rock is really dated.
Piece by Piece is honestly her most matured album in a long time tbh.
All I Ever Wanted is the only album that was kinda "forced" on Kelly. Still she co-wrote half of the album. Anyway devolving in quality is a matter of subjectivity. Breakaway is her peak album commercial wise, but definitely not her peak album quality wise. All I can say is... listen to piece by piece. It's a great evolution of maturity and vocal range. Piece By Piece is also the first album where Kelly creatively stepped out of her comfort zone.
PBP definitely isn't ''lesser in quality'', it's up there with BA and WIR quality-wise. AIEW and Stronger aren't that bad either. The problem with some people (not really targeting on the thread starter) is that on one hand they drag Kelly for stucking to pop-rock and on the other one they are mad when she tries something new.
I've been listening to Breakaway a lot lately and it really is amazing. I think after all the trouble she went through with My December, she took a step back. She meets her record label in the middle by producing formulaic music (Catch My Breath, Heartbreak Song, etc.) and then makes her ballads and songs she wants. I don't think she's concerned with making radio songs, that's the labels issue.
I'll be honest, I haven't heard the whole album yet.
But from what i've heard... I just think the sound is a regression because her music used to sound, idk, organic and kinda edgy.
You're missing a lot them, it's amazing!
EDIT: you started the thread. to you then, sis. Why do you comment something you know nothing about? I don't want to offend you but you seriously can't say how bad or good the album is if you haven't listened to it.

And Stronger was far from "edgy." Highly produced songs may not be a new concept, but for Kelly, it is. She's never really had sleek production aside from the one or two Pop singles. This is her stepping out of her comfort zone and there are all these people like you who clamor for her to regress back to her old sound.
DO you want her to evolve or not? Like make up your damn minds.
