I'm taking this in school, and if you choose to book with sites like Expedia or Travelocity the tickets are non-refundable and completely unchangeable. This even applies to Kayak.

The best options are either the airlines direct website or your local travel agent as at least you have options to cancel or change them if need be.

I love having access to the GDS, cause I'm able to find all the deals and the rules right away.

However look around to see if there are better insurance deals than what they are offering. Credit cards can also offer from trip cancellation to full assistance for those travelling a lot and want to pay once a year to have coverage for road trips, train tickets, plane tickets,... When you add the insurance fees of every single ticket, it might exceed the insurance fee for all year coverage.
They are messy nowadays. It can show too cheap tickets that doesn't exist, doesn't show results for multiple days or doesn't show the cheap tickets available on the websites of the airlines.
