I see you missed the point.

This logic is so flawed. Don't get me wrong, I see where you're coming from. But the whole logic of "if we want racism to go away, we just have to start with a fresh page and treat everyone the same way if the tables were turned!" is so youthfully optimistic and so simplified.

It's not that simple. Racism has a very long history. Racism is still institutionally implemented. It's engrained in our society in ways people don't understand. When I was young, I thought racism had been solved too. Slavery was over, segregation was over, everyone had rights. Hooray! But the older and more mature I get, the more I realise it's still deeply rooted in our society.

There's a reason Asians (specifically the Chinese) have "white" names. Because it's easier for them to get job interviews. Do you not think that's ridiculously racist? That an employer would see "Xiao Chang" on a resumé and would think "probably speaks broken English" and throws the resumé in the bin without even giving them the option of a job interview, regardless of the fact that they're probably extremely qualified - possibly even more qualified than the "white name" employees who do get an interview? Black people are getting shot in the street for doing nothing, because white cops are either racist or scared of them. Why? Statistics show black people are no more violent than white people. It's all a myth that the media perpetuates after decades and centuries of racism. It isn't completely gone.

Like I said, I totally get where you're coming from, but I'm so sick of seeing the "if the tables were turned!!!" argument on ATRL. Because you know what? The white table is a LOT ****ing bigger than the black table. Why? Because of the centuries of history that we have inherited. That is what white privilege is. Having a privilege because of centuries and centuries of racism. It isn't over yet.

That was such a lazy comeback. Black people can't appropriate white culture. They can only assimilate white culture. So a white woman dismissing the idea of black women ballroom dancing would in fact be racist because we still live in a culture of white hegemony. The problem with arguements like yours is you're assuming there is some equal playing field between blacks and whites. Do you have any context of American history when you made your statement?

In a perfect world, yes.... you should be able to flip the script and the pros/cons be the same thing. but you just CANT. We're not the same.

Ok, late reply because I wasn't going to bother but a thought just popped into my head...

Instead of black and white, lets take gay and straight. So gays have been persecuted for decades and discrimination is still very much alive, people are being killed because of their sexuality.

So straight guys who start embracing gay culture, say going with their friends to gay bars or, like this video I watched, start engaging in anal intercourse of any kind (which holds a lot of gay connotations), they're just embracing it and are comfortable with it, which I'm guessing the gays would be happy about, right?

Why isn't it seen as cultural appropriation then? Gays are still being persecuted (I would argue more so than black people), straights are still more 'dominant' and have never experienced the discrimination a gay man has. It is a very similar situation to the one Miss. Banks gets so touchy about. I'm not trying to disregard her thoughts and feelings on it, I can see where she is coming from, but in my eyes, someone embracing their culture, no matter how much of a tit they look (Iggy) is clearly inspired by that culture, should it be seen as such a bad thing?

Her interviews are so interesting. It's as if she's a totally different person off twitter.

Generally I would probably feel offended in a way (if I was black), yet in Iggys case people did too much. She made the most stupid decisions before she got famous and she can't deal with the backlash. But at the end of the day, Iggy loves rap/hip hop and worked as hard as many other people. Iggy DID NOT start with **** like "Fancy".

Iggy should not be the focus of these discussion, because she is nothing more than a white girl loving hip hop and not really thinking about that something that she loves could hurt people.

The main problems is the media world, that only wants to support people like her because they're white and by that more mainstream.

Not hitting play on this racists girls views. Dont care and neither does the world...
