I once read a story about a man from India who proposed to a woman; she said no and he threw acid in her face, leaving her completely blind and with a malformed face.
It was legally decided that the woman could drop acid in the guy's eyes in return. The woman's mom was the one who was gonna do it, since the chick couldn't see anything.
Now, is this fair? I think it is.
But I guess it all depends on where the legal system stands, philosophically speaking. If it considers itself a restauratory system, that is, a system whose objective is to "change" criminals, to turn them into something useful for society, these type of punishments shouldn't exist, and there shouuldn't even be death penalties.
But, if it is a punitary system, with the objective of just punishing and showing others what could happen to them if they did something that the system considers wrong, then these types of thing are completely admittable.
