DoJ finds Ferguson police targeted African-Americans in traffic stops, NYT reports

And during those searches, contraband was discovered on 34 percent of white drivers, compared to 21.7 percent of black drivers.

This report, which could be released as early as this week, will likely result in significant changes within the Ferguson Police Department as city leaders negotiate a settlement with the Justice Department. Federal authorities could threaten the city with a civil rights lawsuit otherwise. The DoJ would not even have to prove the Ferguson PD’s ticketing policies were necessarily racially motivated, but rather had a negative impact on African-Americans and that the result was unavoidable.

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice previously ruled that Darren Wilson, the Ferguson officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, will be cleared of any civil rights charges.

How can you even make excuses for the statistics up there without eventually leading to racism

edit - Also, I'm not surprised this thread is dead and empty. People need to learn to follow-through and keep pushing instead of moving onto the new flavor of the month story smh

So more white people are found with contraband, even tho they are searched way less than black people. Usually that would lead to MORE searches of white people, which is an excuse used for stop&search.clearly these officers have their own agenda if they can't even use "blacks are more likely to carry" as an excuse for disproportionately stops and searching

The article never once says that white people are evil, just that rscial profiling still exists. If you go to WSHH, you can actually see an ex-cop (also white) talk about the quota system they used.

Not necessarily. The way statistics are done, they could say they found more drugs on blacks because even though the percentage of pulled over blacks with drugs were lower, the sheer volume of pulled over blacks was much higher. It's one crappy way people try to validate this kind of behavior.

The other thing they're really missing is non-racial demographic breakdowns. It seems like some half-ass statistics to not include that and I'd bet money that more upper-class blacks are pulled over than upper-class whites.
