It's ignorant, but it's understandable why they feel that way. Society encourages it in general, and if you're a gay man who either isn't or doesn't want to be "effeminate", you're likely going to reject and distance yourself from it because it carries so much stigma.

Russell seems like the classic kind of gay guy who struggled coming to terms with their sexuality because his perception of being gay (effeminate, leather, disco etc.) was so foreign to him and when he did begin to step out of the norm it was immediately stamped out. This usually creates gay men who strive to differentiate themselves - "I'm not one of those gays - I'm normal".

It's less that they're self-loathing, and more that they don't feel they fit in either camp ("normal" straight or "different" gay) so they latch on to whichever is easiest/least offensive - playing normal/straight.
