I'm sorry, but comparing homophobia to ageism is like comparing spots and stripes.

The ageism she experiences is by no means comparable to the gay hate crimes that are currently happening right now as we speak. The big difference here is that age groups are not a minority in society, where as homosexuals represent a minority group. Old people are not ridiculed or harmed for 'being old', when gay people are on a day to day basis around the globe, simply for being 'gay'.Everyone is (in theory) old at some point, so to say ageism is comparable to homophobia is downright ludicrous.

I will openly admit I found her fall funny. Not because she's "old", simply because my instinct was to laugh. Just like many upon many of you here will happily watch 'fail' videos where people fall, as well as violent 'ghetto' brawls - laughing at those is no different to laughing at M's fall. If she was genuinely really hurt? Wouldn't be funny. She's not seriously injured, so why people are making such a big deal about this perplexes me.

People laugh and call Madonna 'old' because the simple matter is she's seen as desperate for attention and seems like she's trying to compete with the current mainstream female artists. I know some Little Medonster is going to pull out her tour receipts at me... that's simply because she is a staple on pop culture and will always attract people to her live shows. As far as selling music goes, she simply cannot compete with the younger generation. Saying that isn't being ageist, it's simply being realistic.

It's also a product of family members being lazy and not wanting to shell out extra money for competent nursing homes. And if someone wants to put their family member in a nursing home, that's on them and that's their issue. It has nothing to do with ageism and everything to do with convenience and selfishness.

Again, though, this has nothing to do with Madonna because she's an able-bodied woman. She's not ELDERLY, she's just older.

Ageism is not a form of institutionalized discrimination. Please stop. Like has been said, there are no laws keeping the elderly from doing what they want, no one is killing the elderly for being elderly, etc. The elderly are not discriminated against.

I agree with Madonna on this. I do because my dad just got fired because of his age. He is 59 and has over 20 years experience in his profession, yet the manager hired a young inexperienced guy about a month ago. Since hiring the new guy, the manager kept giving my dad, who has never missed a day of work in his life, frivolous write-ups over stupid little things. He was doing this to have an excuse to fire my dad, and he did. My dad was just a month away from getting a company ring that would prevent the manager from firing my dad without first speaking to the owner. My dad still can't find work and has a lot of financial obligations. Ageism exists and affects people's livelihoods.

In a historical context, ageism can not compare to racism; even homophobia which would land somewhere in the middle. However, I think Madonna meant to say in a modern context. If you can find how many claims are reported that have to do with ageism and how many are for racism in the workforce, and if they are close to being equal, then you can make the case that ageism is as serious as racism today in those regards. Of course, you would also need to study other angles to get the few spectrum of the issue (and I doubt there are full studies on this out there due the high cost of conducting such a study), but you get my point.

She is right. Ageism is real and can easily be compared. Yes, no one is killed because they're old but what about people just can't get a job (thus have no money to live) despite their education/experience because they're considered "too old"? Especially if they're women. Most of you don't understand because you're young men but you won't be forever 25 and will face it eventually.

Now you're just listing excuses. I was talking about the general experience of older applicants like the article I linked to mentions and the trend of them being blocked from higher positions when they're older (especially if they're not white). Are you saying that all or most of them lack leadership skills? If anything, they have a better idea of leading others with their qualifications and experience. In fact, they're usually used to train those younger "leaders" who are given high positions.

Also, the bit in bold is the same line that people use to explain why blacks and other non-whites are less likely to higher positions. If this isn't ageism, that must not be racism.
