Looking at the list of movies that held the highest grossing of all time rank, yeah it definitely deserves it. It's a blockbuster with a total budget somewhere near the $400M mark which is unheard of. Titanic was more impactful culturally and gave two massive movie stars from it, but Avatar pioneered visual effects to a level never seen before and made incredible use of IMAX and 3D.
