Gurl get the ****out with your "real music fans" ****. BEYONCÉ is a classic in the same vein as The Velvet Rope/etc.

If you pretend it ends at What About and then add Rope Burn and that hidden track it'd be VERY good.

BEYONCE is more her Ray Of Light than TVR. Rihanna is someone who I honestly think could do something like TVR IH the right songwriters and Kanye exec producing.

Why does she need to? Not every black female/r&b artist needs to be compared to Janet 24/7.

But in the scope of Beyonce's career she already had a peak artistic moment (like TVR) with 4 (self titled is overrated srrynotsrry) which was better than most albums that year.

SPILL IT! She went the opposite direction of the mainstream and made great music. Its underperformance made the whole album more understated and powerful too. Plus, 4 is so much more interesting when it comes to actual song composition. The self-titled is sooooo boring for me.

It's not knocking Beyonce, it's just not everyone possesses the same vibe. There's a lot Janet probably can't do either, but Velvet Rope definitely gave her an unexpected edge in that aspect.

Beyonce is more empowerment: she succeeded because she shows you she rises above the storm and carrys on. Janet succeeded in letting you know how to go through the storm, and carry on. Two different scenarios and aspects of life.

Janet came from troubled childhood, troubled family, self image issues, failed marriages, media torment and like she said, even though she had it all in the end through fame, she felt empty. I can't get that from Beyonce, her message has never been soft and vulnerable, only all about power.

If Beyonce was released the standard way, no one would be in here trying to compare it to the legacy of TVR. But there's nothing new to conflate the hype with the quality so whatever. (And don't start with critics because reviews were influenced by hype too and if you deny that you are truly delusional )

The Velvet Rope didn't kill Janet's career, though.

I would argue that Beyoncé is her Velvet Rope. While I think Velvet Rope isn't Janet's best album and is quite overrated, it is her artistic peak and most personal album, like Beyoncé for Bey.

She's already been there and done it better. BEYONCÉ was that impactful, critical acclaimed album with chart success. Plus The Velvet Rope is overrated.

BEYONCÉ is just as good, Janet's best remains Rhythm Nation and that has yet to be topped by some g3rls out there.
