PRISM gets a lot of flak on here because of the second half of the album, which is generic, a bit formulaic, and brings absolutely nothing special to the table.
But what if she released tracks 1 - 6 as an EP... would she have slayed ATRL?
Dare I say... is it better material than any other recent pop girl release?
IMO, PRISM's first half is some of the catchiest, most sonically diverse, and solid single material to come out of any pop girl in the last two years.
1. Roar
A power-pop anthem with big vocals and a message anyone can relate to.
Probably the most basic out of the six, but still loved (and hated) by many.
2. Legendary Lovers
This Indian-tinged track has been described as a perfect "foreign journey" that just
immerses you and takes you in for the ride. Her vocals are perfect and the song
as a whole is just plain intriguing.
3. Birthday
Birthday has been described by critics as close as it gets to perfection in the
pop music sphere. The horns and the sugar-sweet melody make this one my personal
Katy favorites.
4. Walking on Air
Walking on Gheyz features huge diva vocals and an undeniable hook.
The best part? Her vocals. Stunning ad libs in the final chorus along with the
perfect inclusion of a gospel choir really make this a standout.
5. Unconditionally
Uncle is, in my opinion, the weakest track of this entire first half but it is memorable nonetheless.
The gentle wood-block production lets the melody stand out the most, whether that's good or bad (I think the melody is clunky and a big reason why it didn't smash).
6. Dark Horse
The only part of this song ATRL doesn't like seems to be Juicy J's contribution.
Otherwise, Katy's sexy vocals and the songs beat caused the GP to make this song a smash on
its very own: no promotion needed. Still one of the most memorable and successful
pop girl smashes of recent memory.
Do you find the first half of PRISM to be as perfect as I do? Discuss and vote.
