5SOS are the reason why the category was created in the first place after all. I think it went something like this.
Nick Employee A: Oh, no! We're going to have to nominate both 1D and 5SOS next year! What are we gonna do?
Nick Employee B: Simple, put them against each other; It worked in the 90s with NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys..
Nick A: But this is different. They aren't two rival boy bands. They have a shared fanbase, and 5SOS became popular by opening for 1D on their tour. This would be like if we forced their fans to choose between Harry and Niall; they'd be devastated knowing at least one will have to lose.
Nick B: But they'll all go for Harry, won't they?
Nick A: That's not the point! The point is, we can't put them against each other. We have to find a way for both of them to win.
Nick B: Maybe by snubbing one of them?
Nick A: Yeah, great idea. Let's snub the most popular band in the world after two straight years of KCA victories. The kids would love that! And 5SOS are way too hot to ignore either. They're not just another Austin Mahone who we can pretend is "not big enough" for a nomination.
Nick B: Maybe by creating a new category?
Nick A: That's exactly what I was thinking. Now what category can 5SOS fit in?
Nick B: Best foreign band?
Nick A: Aren't 1D international too?
Nick B: Best new band?
Nick A: Wait a minute...Best new artist! Why haven't we thought about that earlier? Alright, we officially declare the award for best new artist! Our nominees will be 5 Seconds of Summer, Iggy Azalea, Meghan Trainor, Fifth Harmony....umm, Echosmith?...and, err, Jessie J?
Nick B: Great! Wait..Jessie J isn't a new artist; she's been around since 2011!
Nick A: I've never heard of her until just this past summer.
Nick B: Yeah, but you forgot one huge name: SAM FREAKIN' SMITH!
Nick A: Oh, yeah...Sam Smith. I guess we'll nominate him for Favorite Male Singer instead. I was going to have Ed Sheeran, but I guess Sam'll do instead.
Nick B: Now you're snubbing Ed Sheeran? He's way more popular among kids than Sam Smith is! He worked with 1D and Taylor Swift, for crying out loud! He deserves the nomination much more!
Nick A: Here we go again...
