In Switzerland an initiative by the Greens party was approved in the first committee. If it passes a few more rounds it could come before a public vote like partnerships were in 2005.

The country has no constitutional court so things are either passed by Parliament or referendum.

Like its neighbor Liechtenstein, parliamentary bills can also land in public hands if the signatures are there. Many Swiss gay activists prefer a referendum since Parliament seems to move at a snail's pace.

Germany doesn't have gay marriage either and I heard a lot of people are surprised, especially Germans who moved to another country. They usually believe it passed years ago, but nope no weddings yet :/

Lol, Angela's party is so not conservative. They don't even know what they're standing for anymore. Great for Switzerland I thought it was passed long ago tho. Gay marriage isn't a huge topic in Germany so that's the only reason why we don't have gay marriage and adoption. Pretty much every party supports it.

Yeah, I know. It's not like a large part of GOP here if anything your court will probably just rule on it like us so at least you have options and growing support. In Switzerland a Christian party wanted to give partnerships all the economic benefits but put a consitutional ban. In the end that idea died because of infighting so I expect the same with Germany soon, more PMs arguing in favor.

Hopefully all German-speaking countries pass it soon. It'll be a race between Italy and Malta (who needs a referendum) for last in Western Europe

They voted 58% to approve partnerships a decade ago. I think the signatures were collected by people opposing it, but it backfired

2/3 of the public support it and the discussion become more focused because of the beneficial (mostly tax) differences between unions and marriage. The Greens said just introduce marriage. By the way this law would also give heterosexuals the chance to enter civil partnerships if they prefer.
