DAY26 - Five Men, One Dream
Reality TV has taken over our airwaves in almost every form. There are singing competitions, model competitions, home makeovers, wife swapping and celebrity dating. So it’s no surprise that one of R&B’s hottest groups stemmed from reality TV —Day 26. We eagerly watched as Brian, Que, Willie, Mike and Robert beat out thousands of hopeful vocalists and deal with one of the music industry’s toughest bosses—Diddy.
Today, Day 26 has reached significant success with their self-titled debut album, topping the charts in its first week. With their second album, Forever and A Day, set to be released on April 14th; Willie, Mike, Que, Robert and Brian are out to prove that male R&B groups are here to stay. Through the years, we’ve seen the men of R&B groups hit the top and fade away - Jackson 5, New Edition, Boyz II Men, Jodeci, Blackstreet, 112 and even B2K. In between the Making the Band curse and the demise of other R&B crooner groups, Day 26 has their work cut out for them to stay on top. Luckily, these guys definitely have the chops and the charm (Mike continuously made me blush with his blatant flirting) to make history. We’ve just been privileged enough to see it in the making.
-Danielle Young
We’ve gotten to see you guys from audition to making your first album all on television. Do you feel as though that is something that has strengthened your career and given you respect in the industry?
Brian: Having a television show, it’s a great advantage as far as the public seeing us and seeing the journey of Day 26. The world hardly ever gets to see other artists in the studio or in their personal day-to-day lives. As far as respect amongst other artists…it’s slowly and surely growing. We get other people that we admired growing up, come up to us and are like, “Yo! You guys are the truth. You guys are doing your thing!” I mean, that’s a blessing in itself.
Do you feel as though you would get the same feedback if you guys didn’t have the show?
Brian: Honestly, I think so just because the talent is definitely there. Not to sound arrogant or cocky, but the talent would definitely shine through.
We know that your female counterparts—Danity Kane—are growing through [a] break up and issues right now. Do you feel Day 26 will suffer the same fate?
Robert: I definitely think we’re stronger than that and at the end of the day. We’ve got a common goal in our minds. Me not liking one of these brothers is not going to stop me from getting this money. That’s a small price to pay. You get what you want to get out of life. When you hang around a person for a long period of time, I do believe you grow to love that person. I believe we’ve done that as a group…Everybody has accepted the fact that Willie is Willie. Que’s going to be Que. Brian’s going to be Brian. Mike’s going to be Mike and I’m going to be me. We love each other like brothers and we’re going to keep it moving.
Has anybody ever thought or ever wanted to do the solo thing?
Robert: Everybody did prior to this point. Prior to now, we were all solo artists. We were working on our own. This situation fell into my lap. Had it not fallen like it did, I would still be a solo artist. We all were aspiring to be solo artists. We had no idea that the future would hold Day 26.
Brian: I think a big plus that we had coming into this whole thing too was some of us had been in groups prior to all of this. So it helped out as far as us understanding that in groups, certain people have roles.
Now that you have a second album coming out, Forever and A Day, which I am excited about; do you feel as though you’ve been able to have more of a say so in your sound?
Brian: We definitely had a whole lot more say so. Actually, we wrote a bulk of the album. We were heavily involved in everything, as far as the music, the creative side, everything. This album is definitely getting a whole lot more of Day 26 this time around.
I heard on the show that y’all wanted to have some babymaking tunes on the album. And I saw on the tracklisting there was a song called “Babymaker.” What’s the sexiest song you’ve sang?
Brian: *starts singing* Honestly, I think it’s a tie between “Babymaker” and “What It Feels Like” from the first album. Very sexy.
Que…are you and Dawn a real thing or is this just something that Diddy masterminded for ratings?
Que: If that is not real, I don’t know what is. I want you to tell everybody that we need to be nominated for the best reality TV show if that is not real. I don’t know how to fake my love. That’s some crazy sh*t if you can.
Are you having a hard time maintaining a relationship with a celebrity, being one yourself?
Que: I think it’s easy. It’s all about being honest and really loving your opponent. *he laughs* Not your opponent, your other half!
Brian: If they’re not in love, I want to know what love is!
Are you jealous?
Brian: No! Definitely not. I love Que and Dawn’s relationship. I think all relationships should be like that. They have a really great relationship. They love on each other. They’re always together. They actually talk—unlike a lot of these relationships. I really love their relationship.
I know that you and Que have butted heads. There was a fight over studio time. Y’all ok, what’s going on there?
Mike: You’ll find out what that fight’s about. We ain’t about to fight over no studio time.
So the fight wasn’t involving any sort of bitchassness?
Mike: Y’all need to stop with all this bitchassness stuff!
Your boss started it!
Brian: I know he started that, but “Keep it 100,” is the new phrase.
Que: Bitchassness is whack!
Mike: We flipped the bitchassness on him one day. We don’t even use it no more.
Do you guys still fight? What about?
Mike: We fight all the time. We might fight because somebody said something wrong to me one day. If we’re feeling our testosterone levels that day, we might get into a fight. We’re guys…Too much testosterone equals a fight every now and then. Sometimes we can’t stand looking at somebody and you might want to beat his ass one day.
Brian: The good thing about our relationship as far as the group is concerned, we’re able to have our disagreements, arguments, confrontations or whatever; but we’re also mature enough to actually get over it. We’ll leave it as water under the bridge.
Is there any competition for Day 26 right now?
Brian: NO! None. There are a lot of people out there talking junk, but NO. There is no competition.
I know you guys did your first album in three weeks. Was the sophomore album done quickly as well?
Mike: Well, we did 37 songs.
Brian: And actually we didn’t start recording until January 7th. We actually recorded 44 songs and we ended February 27th. We basically locked ourselves in the studio. Our families were calling and complaining because they weren’t hearing from us. This album—this time around—we really put a lot into it and we want to show the fans who Day 26 really is. I think everybody is going to be pleased.
Since you guys are family, basically brothers, I feel like you’ll be able to “keep it 100” and tell me who’s the most annoying out of all of you?
Robert: Everybody’s got their days.
There isn’t one that annoys you more than anyone else?
Brian: Everybody’s going to say Brian. If it has to be narrowed down to one person, probably me. I’m always hype and like, “come on guys!” And they’ll look at me, like, “Give me a second!” *he laughs*
Who’s the cry baby?
Que: I’m no cry baby, but I’m sensitive. I can admit that I’m a sensitive mother f*****. I’m working on it. I’m working inside my relationship—a strong woman with a sensitive dude makes a great couple.
Who loves the groupies the most?
Brian: Next question please!
Robert: Next question mommy!
I’m taking this as guilt. You all indulge in the groupies!
Brian: We don’t have groupies.
Mike: I do.
Sure you do! You’re singers, attractive and pretty much everywhere right now. You definitely have groupies!
Brian: Why thank you!
*they all laugh*
Mike: She thinks we’re attractive!
Brian: The thing about it is, we keep our fans at a distance. We never want to…
Robert: Things would turn into sex parties and they would never buy our albums!
*they laugh*
Brian: There is a fine line that we draw. We might flirt or whatever, but we just don’t take it to that level.
Mike: I do!
I’m sure Mike has the most groupies out of all you guys. I went to the site and people really love Mike. Are you guys jealous?
Brian: No.
Mike: Everybody loves everybody.
Who’s the funniest?
Brian: Me
Mike: Mike
Brian: Brian
Robert: Robert
What’s coming up next for you guys?
Mike: A whole lot of touring and … a whole lot of flying and girls screaming and stuff.
Brian: Movies, clothing lines. I have my own record company. So, a whole lot of Day 26. We’re taking over!
Mike: And whole lot of me and you.
Brian: Mike says a whole lot of you and him.
Hmm, I may have to take you up on that!
Mike: Hey now! Let’s get it in baby! Don’t play with me. Tell me the truth now!
Is everyone going to be taking their shirts off this time around?
Brian: You know what, Brian will be taking his shirt off this time around because I have been in the gym. Baby, wait ‘til you see. You’re going to be like, “Damn! That n*gga Brian been working!”
What about you Mike?
Brian: Mike is not Big Mike anymore. We’ve dubbed him Medium Mike. Do not call him Big Mike, no more!
Well Medium Mike, will you be taking off your shirt anytime soon?
Mike: I take off what I want to take off. I don’t really care.
You guys are so silly! Is there anything else that you wanted to speak on that we haven’t spoken about?
Brian: Yes! Day 26 album, Forever and A Day, in stores April 14th and it will be the greatest album that you’ve ever heard in life. Diddy himself said that he was very proud of us and it’s one of the best album he’s heard in a very, very, very long time—and he doesn’t give complements often. He actually stood up and gave us a handclap. That means a lot to us. I can’t wait for the world to hear it. We all can’t wait. It’s going to be crazy and we just want to thank everyone for riding on this journey with us…God bless the haters as well. Again, album in stores—Day 26 Forever and a Day - April 14th. It will change your life.
Anything else guys, or you’re good?
Brian: Did you have anymore questions? You do a good interview! Thank you! It was real fun, I like that. You can interview us anytime! Mike says you can get a private interview if you make your way up here in time. We got a plane to catch.

They have the MTB audience by their side. But at the same time.... Donnie did absolutely terrible, but at least they have more personality and talent then him.

This probably won't even sell what their first album sold in its first week.

This will flop, and I can't say I was really impressed by the first listen. It's a good album, but it's pretty much on the same level as their debut (without the bangers). This album is a lot slower, especially considering they wanted a album full of bangers. If they were with a decent label, and had a good team behind them, this album could very well be a hit, and even have 4 good single releases.
"Stadium Music" has already had a music video shot, so I'm going to assume it's the next single..."So Good" and "Reminds Me Of You" for the next two singles.

This will most likely flop, and I'm kinda hoping it does. The album is just average, the first one is way better.
I tuned in for little portions of tonights episode and they were still talking about Aubrey and Danity Kane.
