Queen's sister had a lesbian lover?
Quote:
Before Kate and Diana, she was the royal star who captivated the public: a fairytale princess with lustrous eyes and flawless skin.
When Sharman - known as ‘Charmin’ Sharman’ or ‘Sass’ - arrived at the Court of St James in 1947, she immediately struck up a warm friendship with Margaret.
Sharman was then 19, the Princess 17. Being wealthy and privileged young women, in the immediate aftermath of the austerity of the War, they were determined to have a good time.
There were countless invitations to parties at the U.S. Embassy, where Sass and the glamorous Margaret held court.
At one, a fancy dress affair, the Queen — then still Princess Elizabeth — went as an Edwardian parlour maid, Prince Philip as a waiter, and Margaret as a Can-Can girl, replete with lace knickers and black stockings.
During her three years in London, Sharman and Margaret had many outings to nightspots such as the 400 Club in Leicester Square, the Milroy in Park Lane, and Café de Paris off Leicester Square.
Extraordinarily, it has been suggested the relationship between the two women went beyond mere friendship.
According to a Channel 4 film in 2005, they were lovers - after Sharman came to live in London as one of the first American debutantes, and gradually became known for her sapphic tendencies.
Among the many incendiary scenes, the film contained a passionate kiss between the actress playing Margaret and the ambassador’s daughter. The film claimed that the women had a two-year relationship.
The claims first surfaced in an unauthorised biography in 2002. The author suggested Sharman had told him about the affair with Margaret.
When Lord Snowdon was asked about the suggestion during an interview ten years ago, he said: ‘I remember Sharman Douglas. She did look rather butch.’
