Unless you lived here like I did you would not be aware of the things that went down. Coleman Young back in the 70's caused the downfall from 1974-1994 he ran as an antiestablishment candidate that reached out to the disenfranchised black voters but he had no plan to fix anything except to go to war with the city's major institutions and demanded the federal government save it with subsidies. Which he got.
Whites and then middle-class blacks fled the city, the city was already doomed before 2000 it was a social and fiscal catastrophe.
Colman Young divided the police against racial lines, Black cops were not to give tickets to blacks, people complained about the increase in crime, chief Hart call it sour grapes and racism while Colman Young was more blunt by saying, "law and order was code for 'Keep the n-----s in their place." Detroit descended in to chaos becoming one of America's most violent cities.
After Young died, Mayor Archer didn't do anything to help he was blocked every time he tried.
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick well if you don't know his story you should look it up. He was convicted on 24 federal counts committed during his mayoralty, including mail fraud and racketeering.
Today, Detroit is an estimated $18 billion in debt including a $3.5 billion pension shortfall. Its population has shrunk to under 700,000 from 1.84 million in 1950.
I didn't even go in to the unions and taxes driving jobs away.
