I never understood this whole oscar campaign thing. Why do you need to do that if you've given a worthy performance?

I'm sure all awards are like this somewhat. You have to kiss up to the guys in charge.

Campaigning is promoting. You need to be seen in order to be recognized. There sure are lines that are crossed sometimes, but generelly speaking, you need to promote your movie if you want it to be a hit and you need to campaign for it if you want it recognized. There are always exceptions but that's the way I see it. Campaigning is nothing bad or immoral, but sheer promotion of your movie (yes, and of yourself).

Maybe for up and coming artists. Certainly doesnt explain how someone like Beyonce is still winning awards from shows she hasnt graced since the IASF era.

If this is all there is to it, then it's nothing unwholesome. Promoting your movie should be a given esp if you have a star billing. Too bad it's called "campaign" though; that word has strong negative political connotations.

1) Women get scrutinized for everything. Whether it's Mo, or Annie, or Melissa Leo - damned if you do, damned if you don't.

2) You have to campaign - but intelligently. Campaign to show your appreciation, but not so much that you seem thirsty for it. Julianne Moore is doing a terrific job of this currently.

ok, don't quote me, but I think it went something like this. I don't think Precious was a big studio picture. I'm pretty certain it was an indie, and so she wasn't getting paid a stump fee to do tons of press and what not for the film. At the time when the movie was in the limelight and up for awards Monique had some other ventures going like a talk show or something, and since she wasn't getting paid . . .

My thing is, why give her the award if campaigning is a pre-requisite? Like others have said, I too wonder how much the lack of campaigning for Precious has to do with her current acting situation vs. the fact that there aren't very many roles for heavier black women.

It's much more complicated (and non-PC) than this but....she wanted to get paid more to do press for the movie as it was a smaller budget operation and she was getting covered little if at all for travel expenses, etc. It was also during her talk show and scheduling conflicts were surmounting.

She also thought a lot of the questions she received during the press junkets were trivial and a lot of insiders came forward to say that she was too blunt, brash and non PC for some agencies liking in a lot of settings.

"Campaigning" means doing press for the film and making a good representation for the studio and a good advertisement in interviews to get people to see it or buy it.

She basically dragged the Academy and Hollywood in her acceptance speech. I'm proud of her, but I can see why they're mad after she basically snatched their gray heads exposing their wrinkling foreheads in national television.

Life requires some compromise. I admire her honesty and I agree with a lot of what she feels, but you can't go far without connecting to people and getting them to like you.
