I've often seen people describe Selena (Quintanilla) on ATRL as a "Latin legend" and someone who was "huge in Latin America and the Queen of Latin Music" and who was bound to become an international superstar.

Yet, having lived in Latin America for over a decade and having researched the subject, it seems Selena Quintanilla was pretty much a complete non-factor outside of Mexico and the Mexican-American community in the States. 100% local (no shade). Her style of music was NOT something that was popular at all in Latin America. Latin legends of music are Gustavo Cerati, Celia Cruz, Andres Calamaro, hell even people like Shakira, Vicentico, or Chabuca Granda who had legitimate musical impact and influence and were heard all over the region, from Argentina to Mexico. From my research, Selena was only popular in Mexico, Puerto Rico (which is part of the US anyway) and select, tiny countries in Central America.
