Chart peaks ultimately mean little, except that sales, airplay, and streaming lined up in a certain way at a certain time. It's like trying to claim that Judas (an obvious flop) was a bigger hit than 22 (2m + sold) just because Judas peaked at #10 on the Hot 100 while 22 peaked at #20.

I mean, Hold It Against Me debuted at #1, but a quick Wikipedia check says it hasn't even sold 2m in the US? Britney herself has multiple bigger hits that never spent a week at #1.

They could call it a hit but it's a hit in the same way Dope was a hit...it's really not.
Give it time though and I'm sure it will be, unfortunately.

A song like Hold It Against Me may have not sold 2mill but it got a ridiculous amount of airplay and it peaked at #1. So it was a big hit regardless of its sales because it succeeded in all other aspects. A song being a hit is not one dimensional, just as much as you're saying it shouldnt rely solely on chart placement, you can't rely solely on sales or airplay either. Proof being 22 sold 2m+ yet it was clearly not a very big hit in terms of chart placement and its non-existent airplay. Im going to assume its sales are attributed to its use in coke commercials.

22 has 224,667,651 on Youtube and is currently earning around 400K views each day. The song was definitely a hit despite any lack of airplay it had!

A "Love Me Harder"-sized hit. Which is pretty decent for a third single. Perhaps a disappointment considering many expected 1989 to be a non-stop smash machine ala Teenage Dream, but it makes up for it in album sales.

The song isn't a huge hit, Taylor is just popular and that song was a single. And unlike with someone like Gaga or something where they're popular but they can release a single and its lack of dominance shows. Taylor can release a single, not have it smash, and still get 200mill+ views on youtube and sell a decent amount. It doesn't mean it smashed. 22 was nonexistent in every aspect of popular culture outside of that Coke commercial.

Hit is still an exaggeration. It was just a moderate success. Respectable for the single number that it was and by comparison to the hit singles that came before it. It was a natural decline.

22 is a hit according to everything but radio airplay and is the biggest song to ever peak at #20 according to Billboard. But i wont try anymore, think what you want
