While i do agree that spanish speakers should learn english IF they live in the US. I also believe americans should learn other languages stop being so uncultured, go out of their bubble see the world not just the mall and mcdonads.

Do you know how expensive it is to travel the world as an American? Add to the fact that Americans in general tend to work longer and have less vacation days than other countries makes it harder. It's easier to go accross the country and see the scenery than to go to Sweden.

Gosh I don't even know where to start with you. And not everyone eats McDonald's.

I understand what you're saying but still the US sometimes is too isolated culturally from the other countries. Latin Americans and Europeans learn English from middle school and are acquainted with American culture thanks to the media, whereas the US produces all of its own media so it's just more obvious than Americans just don't get as much exposure to other cultures.

If you live in an area where the majority are Latino or Hispanic then you should try to learn Spanish mostly because it can help you when you're trying to find work. But that's mostly Southern California and Florida.

English is not an easy language to learn by the way, especially to those who are older when immigrating to the United States. Not with words like: There, they're, and their. Your and You're. Like native English speakers still have trouble with it

The second hand embarrassment I got from that post was too much for me to reply. Thank you for clarifying what is common knowledge.

And to add on the matter, the French folk I had met before were very vocal about how mad they were about their elders still being fixed on thinking French is a world wide spoken language.

Funny, when a lot of people would look down on you and think you are uneducated for using a term like "boo", perhaps you should try to be less racist and judgmental towards others. And, for the record, a LARGE part of modern day US used to be Spanish-speaking Mexico, and millions of people who live in the States nowadays descend from those Spanish-speaking families that lived in those areas when they were annexed by the States. Spanish is as much a valid language there as English. It's part of the native (not Native American) history and culture. Where do you think names like "Los Angeles" come from?

Mexico is a beautiful country with a eclectic culture. But you're saying America has no culture which is not true. But really going to Mexico is all Americans need for culture? Americans do that all the time Cancun, Tijuana, Acapulco, etc. Anything further than Mexico or some parts of Canada gets expensive.

English is a beautiful language and there is a reason besides England and America's power that it is so big. It is relatively easy and English speakers produce a lot of cultural artifacts as opposed to speakers of other languages.

I think people should make as much of an effort to be multilingual as possible.

Plus, americans do learn spanish. Most public schools in my experience have a language requirement and offer spanish and french, some even start in kindergarten. The problem is that nobody learns anything because our school system is ****** up and nobody cares about retaining the information after they pass whatever test they are studying for. That will probably change as the population changes and commercial organizations start catering more to spanish speakers though.

As a Spanish native speaker, I think we have a great advantage because we can use the language across almost the whole continent. But let's get real, English is the main language and people interested to get into America must learn it. However, it's highly appreciated when Americans learn other languages, but it's not like they actually need to do it.
