They commit these kind of atrocities at least in part because they want to engage western forces. If we "stand by" and "let" these things happen, it's a propaganda victory for ISIS. If we get stuck in and it gets messy, it's western imperialism showing its head again.
Islamic fighters have always been about ground combat and that's the real prize, engage the West on their territory. They are hopeless, pathetic flops at anything other than hand-to-hand. As long as the West keep its hands clean and attacks from the sea and air, we good.
