Beyoncé wanted to sing it, and we did not breathlessly await her performance as much as we were left to grudgingly endure it. Through much of her awkward rendition I found myself praying that our precious Lord would take the mic.
But I digress. There's a larger issue at play than just the swapping of one great singer for another less talented but more popular one. Ledisi, with a crown of enviable braids and beautiful dark skin, was passed over by an artist whose nose job, ten pounds of blonde hair, and suspiciously alabaster skin has no doubt aided in her ascent to the top. What perhaps Beyoncé and Grammy producers failed to realized (the producers can feign ignorance while Queen Bey, a black woman, cannot) was that this was a moment of distinct sensitivity and consequence. The performance of this iconic song, of which Beyoncé and her family apparently believes is uniquely theirs alone -- though it's sung almost universally at black funerals and churches -- should have been fraught with significance. How dumb. Had it not been for Bey, the song wouldn't have been performed AT ALL bc Ledisi was NEVER scheduled to perform in the first place. Bey used HER performance slot to raise awareness of current racial issues and THIS is what people are talking about? To me, this article is basically hating on Bey just for being Bey.
If y'all wanna hear Ledisi sing, buy her music so she can book the Grammy stage.
Such an unprofessional article. Her performance was amazing, she hasn't had a nose job, has always been light skinned and her or her family have never claimed or alluded to the idea that the song was her own, considering she talks about and praises the original artist's version (who is not Ledisi) in the BTS of her performance.
So many people pissed about Ledisi not performing yet not a single one of them bothers to buy her records or make her the star she supposedly deserves to be. So transparent.
