Mew is said to be the mother monster of pokemon meaning they all have Mew DNA... and ditto can change into any little monster. Plus the transform. Pretty convincing tbh

This always confused me too- why would the scientists just casually keep releasing these failed experiments? Another theory that I've heard is that Ditto is a product of Mew, seeing as Mew was the first and all. Mew then took form of whatever it saw, whether that be a cow (Miltank), a coconut tree (Exeggutor) or even an ice-cream (Vanillish) and if the form was strong enough it became semi-permanent. It explains why Ditto is able to breed with every non-legendary species, why so many species are able to breed outside of their own species (egg groups), and why we keep finding new species, many based off of inanimate objects. Obviously, as the course of time progresses and the proto-pokémon begin to mate the transformation becomes more permanent.

That made my head spin but it makes sense.

Another, more realistic, theory is that they wanted to create a Pokemon that could become other Pokemon and they gave it the name "Ditto" meaning same lol. I suppose the Transform overlap is that Ditto had the move and they wanted Mew to be able to use every move so that's why it became that way. I think with Mew learning the move naturally that it was seen as a way for Mew to be hidden in plain sight.

That would make sense, too! Mew is a bit of an almighty, so him just naturally learning how to transform as a way to protect himself from possible threats seems reasonable. I don't think Ditto being purposefully made the way he is completely out of the realm of possibility.

and yes! It would explain why there are still so many new pokémon, and why a lot of them are themed after inanimate objects. Like, image a Ditto walking through the grass in a park and sees an ice-cream that a kid had dropped. He then tries to transform into that object, which would result in a proto-Vanillite. The form became strong with that particular Ditto, and once he started to come across other Dittos and evolve into new forms, ice-cream became an official species. It actually explains the reasoning behind a lot of pokémon that would typically be inanimate, like Chingling, Klink and Voltorb.

The Ditto becoming objects becoming Pokemon thing is interesting. I suppose that's one way of looking at Game Freak and co running out of ideas.

I wish after all these years that they would add a story to the games. I've literally learned NOTHING about how the world came to be or what is what. Well maybe not literally nothing but for sure not enough to make sense.
