Because she's R&B (and a black woman). It just makes it less likely for her to win, especially if she's competing with other soul and R&B artists in the same category.
But I like the fact that people keep making threads about this and articles have been written about her loss. Clearly everyone feels her album was the most obvious/deserving. Speaks volumes.
Black women don't win Album of the Year. Two black women winning in the span of sixteen years? Not on the Academy's watch!
And if you want to scream "this has nothing to do with race!!!" (as if receipts don't prove the last black woman winning was 1999 and a black artist in genera was ten years ago), vote splitting is also a valid reason. Two British singer/songwriter acts versus two R&B artists pit against a white rock artist.
I can only assume the committee came to a consensus that Beck's body of work was stronger and consequently more deserving? Personally, I thought that BEYONCÉ was going to win!
