None of what you're saying is contradicting what I said. You're explaining the history and reasons behind the popular negative attitude towards the word today, not saying what I said isn't true. It's a fact that the word 'feminist' is demonized with average people as if feminism is some crazy thing for women who arw supportive of something that's not necessary because women are doing fine.

You'll have to ask them. I'm there are plenty of women who understand feminism and still reject it, but there are tons who are just weary of the word and are scared to use it. Salma Hayek is very inyelligent and won an award at a Gloria Steinem event for her work for women's rights, but did everything she could disassociate herself from the word 'feminist' when asked about being one [she said I'm not] and it was obvious why. Her excuse was that she supports eights for all people... as if feminism is against that.

I think she's putting to much weight on what a 'feminist' means. Many women who don't label themselves as such are simply being honest, they understand that 'feminism' is some kind of political activism.. so, even though they agree with the ideology, they are not active or don't care at being talkative about it, they have their own business to take care or other subjects they think are more relevant. A non-supporter isn't necessarily someone who is scared or annoyed.

That would make sense if the event was a general one, not a woman's event for honoring women making strides in different areas. She was not asking average women on the street.

FYI feminism doesn't have to be political activism. That's just very proactive and policy oriented feminism.

She said feminism changes, and she's not insistent on anything. She gave her opinion and she said feminism is open to broad ideas, but she has her own. She's against hyper sexualization of women, not women being sexual.

What is with all these pathetic Beyonce stans hijacking this thread? The only thing Annie Lennox has ever said about Beyonce is that she thinks her brand of feminism is "feminism lite," which is neither inaccurate nor offensive. Everything Beyonce has said or sang related to the topic is just empty slogans. I remember the original thread about this topic where people actually used superficial "girl power" anthems like Independent Women and Survivor as "evidence" of her feminism.

"Disempowering" is not a real word and she's never actually given any specific definition of what a feminist is and . In fact, she specifically says in the interview that it's inclusive. Also, I doubt she actually told the audience "this is a feminist is" so that doesn't even make any sense.
