Look at Sam Smith. Trying to play the whole "I'M A REAL ARTIST WHO CAN ACTUALLY SING" shtick. Then when you give his music a try, it boils down to the same crap that everyone else is releasing. Three hits from his album already, and they can all be summed up in quotes from other songs that are exactly like it content-speaking.

Stay With Me: "You're all I need and I don't want you to leave me."
Latch: "I will never let you go."
I'm Not the Only One: "You broke my heart."

He's just yet another passing by Ed Sheeran/Norah Jones/Alanis Morisette/etc. who pass off as being more genuine than average pop stars when in reality, they're a different flavor of the same thing.

sorry, but an artist who needs several big named co writers to make an obvious cookie cutter radio friendly song is signifcantly less of an artist than someone like FKA Twigs. You're just being a Britney stan lol

Sam Smith is in it for the dough & is manifactured af. You thinking he's an example of a real artist proves you're trapped in one genre & not to be taken seriously.

But if said artist writes and produces music that sounds exactly like Britney's material, that doesn't make his music any more real than Britney's one. It just makes the artist more independent. That's my point.

"Real" pop stars (Sam Smith, ADELE, Alicia Keys, etc) are the same as the manufactured ones in terms of how good their actual music is.

But "real" artists in General- those that you could classify as alternative, rap, hip hop, rock, whatever....ARE better than the pop girls. 90% of pop music is produced by the same 3 people, its the same melody and sound over and over, with minor adjustments here and there.

Sam Smith sucks.

Writing your own music doesn't make it any better, and let's be real, a lot of artists, mainstream and indie, would be better off placing blame on other songwriters for the lyrics in their songs.
